I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's not about how many megapixels. I can't believe how many times I get asked that by people. It is, by a factor of a hundred, or more, about the size of the lens, and the size of the pixel sensor, not the sheer number of megapixels. I don't care if a point and shoot has 1 billion megapixels, the lens that gets the light to it is completely incapable of resolving the image accurately to it. I'll take the 2.74 mp of the original D1 over 12 mp of any of today's "higher-end" point and shoots anyday. As a matter of fact, Canon and Olympus had it right in the beginning with the G1, G2, G3, Olympus C2040, C3040 etc with their big lenses, and 3 or 2 megapixels, and people who I told back at the turn of the millenium to get those cameras are still happy with them.
If you want to sound smart when you talk to a real photographer, you should talk about lenses, and not megapixels.
